BIKING ACROSS KANSAS | home
OKLAHOMA ROUTE 66
My good friend Kelly and I started planning this trip back in July. We did not actually know where we would be riding or for how far. All we did know was that we were going to tour by bike and it was going to take place in the last week of October.
We considered the KATY Trail in Missouri (which we had done on two previous occasions) but felt that late October's weather was too unpredictable. It would also mean that Kelly would have a long drive from his home in Texas to get there and an equally long drive home. I suggested that we find something in between and that meant Oklahoma.
After a little internet research we turned our interest to Route 66 between Tulsa and Oklahoma City. As we prepared we received information and assistance from The Oklahoma Route 66 Association, a couple of local bike clubs, chambers of commerce, and a few city offices. By the end of August we had what appeared to be a rideable route with overnight acommodations spaced at regular intervals and cities and towns with all the services we would require along the way.
Our route would take us from Sapulpa (southwest of Tulsa) through Bristow, Stroud, Davenport, Chandler, Wellston, Luther, Arcadia and Edmond. At Edmond we would turn back towards Chandler and then north/east to Agra and Cushing before returning to Sapulpa.
